Size Doesn’t Matter

Big Ideas. Tiny Scale.

We challenged artists to abandon the idea that impact depends on scale. Every work in the exhibition measured no larger than 12″ × 12″, creating a shared constraint that became a catalyst for experimentation, precision, and bold storytelling. Rather than shrinking their ideas, participating artists distilled them—compressing humor, protest, intimacy, tension, beauty, absurdity, and personal narrative into works that demanded attention far beyond their physical dimensions.

Featuring artists working across painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, printmaking, ceramics, fiber, and other contemporary practices, the exhibition celebrated the power of creative restraint. Each piece demonstrated that limitation can sharpen intention, forcing artists to edit harder, say more with less, and rethink the relationship between size and presence. Together, the works transformed the gallery into a collection of concentrated moments—small objects carrying oversized emotional, political, and conceptual weight.

The exhibition also introduced the Not Shockboxx MiniBoxx, a traveling micro-gallery created to bring contemporary art beyond the gallery walls. Following the exhibition, selected works began appearing in local businesses and unexpected public spaces throughout the South Bay, extending the life of the exhibition and reinforcing its central idea: great art doesn’t need a large footprint to make a lasting impression.

SIZE DOESN’T MATTER was less about miniatures than about disproving a common assumption. It asked artists and audiences alike to reconsider how we measure significance, reminding us that the most memorable work isn’t always the biggest piece in the room. Sometimes it’s the one that quietly refuses to let go.
