Don’t F&$€%ing Touch Me

Don’t F&$€%ing Touch Me marked the debut solo exhibition of Los Angeles-based artist James Frost, bringing together a body of oil paintings that was technically precise, intensely personal and entirely his own.

An autistic artist who draws from the methods of the Old Masters, Frost uses the smoothness and luminosity of oil paint to create work that feels simultaneously classical and contemporary. Moving between portraiture, allegory, abstraction, realism and the surreal, his paintings are immediately legible yet quietly loaded with meaning. Solitary figures inhabit singular worlds, surrounded by pop-culture references, animals, alien spacecraft, art icons, music heroes and unexpected flashes of humor.

Frost described the exhibition simply as “everything I like.” That expansive universe included wolves, cats, lonely landscapes, Barbara Eden, the Dali Llama and imagery that moved effortlessly between the serene and the strange. The resulting exhibition was bold, vivid and unmistakably Frost, allowing the work to speak with the volume and complexity its artist often chooses not to.

Presented at Not Shockboxx in 2025 and remaining on view through September 20, Don’t F&$€%ing Touch Me was both an artistic milestone and a middle finger to the ordinary.
