Pray the Gay Away was a satirical, boundary-pushing exhibition that flipped the bird at conversion therapy, homophobia and the hypocrisy of trying to “fix” queerness.
The work did not hold back. Through humor, satire and fearless honesty, participating artists pushed buttons, rattled cages and confronted the damage caused when identity is treated as something shameful, sinful or in need of correction. The exhibition reclaimed the language historically used against LGBTQ+ people and turned it into something defiant, communal and unmistakably queer.
This was not a family-friendly exhibition, nor was it intended to make everyone comfortable. It celebrated queer voices, allyship and the power of art to expose hate, challenge hypocrisy and spark necessary conversations.
Pray the Gay Away opened at Not Shockboxx on October 5, 2025, and remained on view through October 25. It marked the debut exhibition from the gallery’s artist collective.
